Immigrant rights groups are speaking out after the disappearance and death of an 18-year-old Sodus woman.
Selena Hidalgo-Calderon, 18, was found buried in May on a Sodus farm where she was employed and resided. Her son, 14-month-old Owen Hidalgo-Calderon remains missing.
The search for the missing toddler was called off on Sunday, but family and immigration rights officials say the time is now for change.

“What happened to Selena is preventable with different laws and different policies. Selena was one of several local women who I know that are survivors of domestic violence and domestic abuse. Sadly in this country, women who are murdered are more likely to be murdered by an intimate partner. Domestic abuse is a very serious danger and farm worker women – like all women – need to be able to access resources that help keep them safe,” said Carly Fox, an organizer with Worker Justice Center of NY.
Those officials say Selena had a car, but no license.
Selena’s mother said in a statement that “immigrants are not evil.” She added, “The suspect who did this is.” She added that the search for her grandson should continue.
